Winner - 2015 MBA Building Excellence - Award Best Alterations and Additions between $2.5 – 6 Million category.
In May of 2015 Westruct received the honour of receiving the Master Builders Excellence Awards for Best Alterations and Additions between $2,500,000 and $6,500,000.
Westruct were involved with the project from its inception and in conjunction with Meyer Shirecore Architects managed the project through the Design and Documentation process.
The building was iconic in that it fused the existing 110 year Old Heritage listed Nurses Quarters almost seamlessly with the new 2 storey cafe , accommodation and kitchen facilities via a transparent link section which partially wraps around parts of the old building in an almost “ Museum” like display of preservation .
The heritage building was fully refurbished and strengthened under instruction and in Collaboration with Annabel Wills from the Heritage Council of Western Australia.
Several other Innovative designs were employed on the buildings to achieve a practical, cost effective and Integrated design:
Fire/Cyclone Rated Windows – To achieve Fire certification, the building is compartmentalised into three fire ‘zones’. Having windows located within fire walls, we had to develop a window system to satisfy both fire protection and C4 cyclonic protection. Such a product did not exist in Australia prior to this project. The builder (Westruct) , the client (Dome Coffees), the architects and the Building Certifier collaborated closely with ‘Firescope Fire Services’, and ‘TPS Technical Protection Systems’ to develop, test and certify a double glazed window system to achieve both fire and cyclone protection to Australian Standards.
Webforge Screening - Another innovation was the use of Webforge grating as screens. While not uncommon the webforge lattice with steel posts reflects that of the Nurses’ Quarters verandah detailing.
