With Westruct being selected to head the build and project management for the new Dome Café in Port Hedland, I worked alongside Steven Madaffiri for the entire duration of the project. Unlike the traditional ‘builder’ role, Steven was pivotal during the concept and design development phase of the project, as well as right through the certification process, ensuring buildability, efficiency and economy whilst maintaining design intent. Being involved in this early role meant that Steven was able to be across every aspect of the job.
The project itself presented many construction challenges, being in such a remote location with less than ideal conditions. The project consisted of the full renovation and refurbishment of a Heritage Listed Medical Officer’s Quarters, a brand new two-storey café, commercial kitchen and function facilities, as well as on-site accommodation and administration areas. Finished to a very high standard, the restoration/renovation/build was nominated for both a Heritage Award from the Heritage Council of WA, and a Master Builder’s Award for ‘Best Commercial Alteration/Addition’.
I was most impressed with the attention to detail by Westruct – always willing to take the time to ‘do it right’ the first time, especially when it came to ‘on-the-fly’ decisions and design alterations, some of which were raised by Steven during the construction process to make sure that the end-result was to the company’s high standards and expectations.
I would make no hesitations in recommending Westruct Pty Ltd. On a personal level, I thoroughly enjoyed working with Steven and his team on the project and I would have no hesitations engaging Westruct Pty Ltd again in the future.
